New Elephants’ Prosthetic Legs for Landmine Victims Mosha and Motala, Following a Non-production Period of Two Years
วันที่ 21 มี.ค. 65 ที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง อ.ห้างฉัตร จ.ลำปาง รศ.นพ. เทอดชัย ชีวะเกตุ ศัลยแพทย์กระดูกและข้อและเวชศาสตร์ฟื้นฟู อดีตเลขาธิการมูลนิธิขาเทียมฯ พร้อมทีมงานได้เดินทางมาร่วมทำขาเทียมอันใหม่ให้กับพังโมตาล่า อายุ 61 ปี และพังโม่ชะ อายุ 16 ปี หลังจากช่วง 2 ปีที่ผ่านมา ช้างได้เติบโตขึ้นทำให้ขาเทียมอันเดิมคับไม่สามารถใส่เดินได้สะดวก ประกอบกับเกิดสถานการณ์แพร่ระบาดของไวรัสโควิด-19 จึงไม่สามารถทำขาเทียมอันใหม่ได้
On the 21st of March 2022, Associate Professor Dr. Therdchai Jivacate and his team arrived at Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation Hospital in Hangchat District, Lampang Province. Ajarn Dr. Therdchai is a bone and joint surgeon as well as a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He had, in the past, served as Secretary General of the Prostheses Foundation. Ajarn Dr. Therdchai and his team are producing new prosthetic legs for Motala, aged 61, and Mosha, aged 16, following a non-production period of two years. Mosha had been growing, causing tightness in her previous prosthetic leg, which means that the elephant could no longer comfortably wear the outdated prosthetic leg. The non-production period was due to the Covid-19 pandemic that had brought operations to a standstill, preventing the team from producing new prosthetic legs for the elephants.
น.ส.โซไรดา ซาลวาลา เลขาธิการมูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง เปิดเผยว่า เนื่องจากสถานการณ์โควิด ช่วง 2 ปีที่ผ่านมา จึงไม่ได้มีการปรับขาเทียมให้กับช้าง ซึ่งพังโม่ชะตัวโตขึ้นมากทำให้ขาเทียมเดิมที่ใช้อยู่คับและเตี้ย จึงหยุดใส่ตั้งแต่วันที่ 26 ม.ค. 64 ช่วงที่ไม่ได้ใส่ขาเทียม โม่ชะจะนอนลงบนเบาะประมาณ 3 ครั้ง ครั้งละประมาณ 1-1.30 ชั่วโมง ทางมูลนิธิจึงได้ประสานทาง รศ.นพ.เทอดชัย เข้ามาทำขาเทียมอันใหม่ให้ ซึ่งจะเป็นขาอันที่ 13 ของพังโม่ชะ ส่วนพังโม่ตาลาปัจจุบันได้ใช้ขาเทียมอันที่ 8 แต่ได้เกิดแผลถลอกบริเวณเท้าซ้ายหน้า จึงหยุดใส่ขาเทียม เพื่อทำขาเทียมอันใหม่ให้เป็นอันที่ 9 ให้ใส่ได้สบายขึ้น
Soraida Salwala, Secretary General of Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation, stated that that the past two years of the pandemic had prevented the prosthetic legs from receiving adjustments. Mosha has been growing up significantly, causing her previous prosthetic leg to get tighter and shorter. So, the elephant had to stop wearing her previous prosthetic leg on the 26th of January 2021. When Mosha isn’t wearing her prosthetic leg, she lies down on her mattresses three times throughout the day. Each resting period lasts one to one and a half hours. The Foundation has made arrangements for Ajarn Dr. Therdchai and his team to come in to produce new prosthetic legs for the elephants. For Mosha, this will be her 13th prosthetic leg. Motala is currently using her 8th prosthetic leg. But due to some abrasion wounds on her front left leg, she had to stop wearing her prosthetic leg. She has been waiting for the production of her 9th prosthetic leg, which she will be able to wear with greater comfort.
ด้าน รศ.นพ.เทอดชัย ชีวะเกตุ ศัลยแพทย์กระดูกและข้อและเวชศาสตร์ฟื้นฟู อดีตเลขาธิการมูลนิธิขาเทียมฯ กล่าวว่า จากการตรวจสอบขาของพังโม่ชะ พบว่ามีจุดคับแน่นทำให้ช้างเดินไม่สะดวกอยู่ 2-3 จุด เพราะช้างตัวโตขึ้น จึงต้องทำการวัดขนาดขาใหม่ เพื่อนำมาทำเบ้า แต่จะใช้ขาที่หล่อปูนขาวขึ้นรูปไว้อันเดิม และนำมาพอกเพิ่มเติมและตกแต่งให้เท่ากับขนาดขาปัจจุบัน ซึ่งการทำงานนั้นต้องใช้เวลาไม่ต่ำกว่า 1 สัปดาห์จึงจะเสร็จ เพราะต้องทำแล้วทดลองสวมให้ช้างใส่เดินดูว่ามีปัญหาหรือไม่ และมีการปรับแก้ให้พอดีกับขาให้ช้างใส่สบายที่สุด โดยอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ก็จะเป็นวัสดุตัวเดิม ส่วนที่ยากจะเป็นส่วนที่เชื่อมต่อจากเบ้าขาและลงมาเป็นเท้า เพราะต้องใช้วัสดุที่แข็งแรงและทำอย่างดีให้ช้างลงน้ำหนักได้
Associate Professor Dr. Therdchai Jivacate stated that, upon examination of Mosha’s leg, the tightness that had been causing the elephant discomfort while walking lies in two to three sites. The elephant has been growing, so new measurements need to be taken for the design of the hollow. The previous plaster mold will be used, with additional layers and designs that will fit the elephant’s current leg measurements. The working period takes at least one week to complete the end-product. The elephant needs to experiment with wearing the prosthetic leg and walking on it, so that that any problematic areas can be identified. Corrections and adjustments need to be made, so that the elephant can wear the prosthetic leg as comfortably as possible. The materials used to make the prosthetic leg have already been tried with success. The difficult part is the connecting point between the leg hollow and the artificial foot, since the materials used must be strong, well designed and well assembled for the elephant to place her weight on.
การติดต่อเข้ามาเช่นกันจากต่างประเทศให้ทำขาเทียมช้าง แต่จะเป็นช้างป่าซึ่งควบคุมได้ยาก ประกอบกับอุปกรณ์ต่างๆที่จะใช้งานมีจำนวนมาก จึงไม่สามารถทำให้ได้ เพราะจะทำได้สำหรับช้างที่มีความคุ้นเคยกับคนและควบคุมได้เพื่อความปลอดภัย ซึ่งทางมูลนิธิเพื่อนช้างได้มีการเปิดโรงงานทำขาเทียมสำหรับช้างพังโม่ชะและพังโม่ตาลาไว้โดยเฉพาะ ทำให้มีอุปกรณ์และวัสดุพร้อมที่สามารถทำได้ รศ.นพ. เทอดชัย กล่าว
The Foundation has been contacted by individuals and organisations based in other countries concerning the production of elephants’ prosthetic legs. But the elephants concerned in those cases of enquiry were wild elephants that would have been difficult to control. Furthermore, there are a wide range of tools and materials involved in the production of the prostheses. So, producing prosthetic legs for wild elephants was an idea that could not be put into practice. Such an operation could only realistically be carried out for elephants that are familiar with people, since elephants in domesticity can be controlled for safety purposes. Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation has also opened an elephant prosthetic leg factory, especially for Mosha and Motala. This means that the tools, equipment and materials are readily available for the design and production of the prostheses, stated Associate Professor Dr. Therdchai.
ประวัติช้าง พังโม่ชะ ปัจจุบันอายุ 16 ปี ได้รับบาดเจ็บจากการเหยียบกับระเบิดในประเทศพม่า ขณะอายุได้ 7 เดือน บาดแผลฉกรรจ์เท้าหน้าข้างขวาขาดหายไป เจ้าของได้ยกให้มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้างดูแล พังโม่ชะได้ทดลองใส่ขาเทียมอันแรก เมื่อปี 2551 ช้างลงน้ำหนักได้ดีและยอมรับขาเทียม ใส่เดินได้ปกติ โดยจะถอดออกเมื่อช้างง่วงนอน ซึ่งพังโม่ชะถือว่าเป็นช้างเชือกแรกที่ได้ใส่ขาเทียมอันแรกของโลก
Mosha is now 16 years old. The elephant became a landmine victim at the age of seven months when she stepped on a landmine across the Myanmar border. Due to the extreme severity of the injury, she ended up losing her front right foot. The owner donated Mosha to Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation. She experimented with wearing her first prosthetic leg in 2008. The elephant placed her weight well while wearing the prosthetic leg. She accepted this newly introduced leg and was able to walk normally while wearing it. The prosthetic leg is taken off when the elephant is sleepy, which is when she lies down to have a rest. Mosha became the world’s first elephant to wear a prosthetic leg.
พังโม่ตาลา ปัจจุบันอายุ 61 ปี ได้รับบาดเจ็บจากเหยียบกับระเบิดในประเทศพม่า เข้ารับการรักษาที่มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง เมื่อวันที่ 18 ส.ค. 42 ได้รับขาเทียมเมื่อปี 2552 ในช่วงแรกพังโม่ตาลาไม่ยอมลงน้ำหนักเพราะยังไม่คุ้นเคย เมื่อใส่ได้ระยะหนึ่งแล้วจึงเริ่มยอมรับขาเทียม และใส่เดินได้ดี ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นช้างเชือกที่ 2 ของโลกที่ใส่ขาเทียม
Motala is now 61 years old. She was injured by a landmine across the Myanmar border. She arrived for treatment at Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation Hospital on the 18th of August 1999. Her first prosthetic leg was produced in 2009. At first, Motala refused to place her weight on the prosthetic leg because she wasn’t familiar with the new instrument. After a period of experimentation with wearing the prosthetic leg, she began to accept it and walked well while wearing it. Motala is the world’s second elephant to wear a prosthetic leg.
มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง
