Soraida Salwala: Love, Devotion, and Mission for Elephants

การสร้างมูลนิธินี้ขึ้นมา เริ่มจาก “โรงช้าง” ที่เพราะเป็นที่แรกในโลก ไม่มีพิมพ์เขียวให้ยืมใช้ โซไรดาจึงทำหน้าที่เป็น “ลูกมือสถาปนิก” ขีดทรายเขียนแบบด้วยตัวเอง

The setting up of the Foundation began with an elephant care unit. But, since this was the first of its kind in the world, there was no model that we could rely on to provide guidance in the process of drafting out the plans. So, Soraida took on the role of an ‘architect’s assistant’. She drew the plans of the elephant hospital layout on the sand floor.

ชีวิตคนพิทักษ์ช้างช่วงแรกเรียกว่าต้อง “กัดฟันสู้” เพราะต้องนอนในเต็นท์ข้างๆ ช้างนานถึง 3 ปี ถึงจะมีไฟฟ้า เพิ่งจะมีถนนลาดยางเข้ามูลนิธิก็เมื่อไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมานี้ และพอมีกำลังพอที่จะสร้างเรือนไม้ไว้เป็น “สำนักงาน” ก็ถูกพายุฤดูร้อนพัดพังทั้งหลัง จนต้องเบิกเงินสำรองมาสร้างใหม่ สร้างความเสียใจให้กับโซไรดามาก

For the life of an elephant protector, the early stages could be described as a battlefield. Soraida had to sleep in a tent near the elephants for three years, before the elephant hospital finally had proper electricity. The construction of the road leading into FAE Elephant Hospital was only completed some years ago. And when there were sufficient resources to build a wooden house that would serve as an office, the entire building was destroyed by thunderstorms. Back-up funds had to be obtained for a new construction effort. The unfortunate turn of events deeply saddened Soraida.    

เมื่อเรียนรู้การเป็น “สถาปนิก” แล้ว ผู้หญิงคนนี้ยังต้องเรียน “สัตวแพทย์” เมื่อไม่มีความรู้เรื่องสุขภาพช้างทำให้เธอต้องหาความรู้อย่างหนัก แต่จากการที่ได้คลุกคลีอยู่กับช้างทุกๆ วัน ทำงานตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง จนบางครั้งก็ไม่ได้นอน จึงทำให้รู้ลึกเรื่องช้าง เฉกเช่น “แม่” ดูแล “ลูก”

Apart from learning how to be an ‘architect’, Soraida also had to learn to be a ‘veterinarian’. Having started out with no foundational knowledge of elephant health science, she had to make enormous efforts to learn. Spending time with elephants on a daily basis, and devoting herself to her work 24 hours, meant that there were periods in which she couldn’t lie down to have a proper rest. All this extensive experience has helped her to acquire a profound knowledge and understanding of elephants, much like a mother who is overseeing and caring for her children.

“ครั้งหนึ่งได้รับจดหมายว่า มีการดักช้างที่กาญจนบุรี เพราะเขาจะวางท่อก๊าซริมป่า ซึ่งเราต่อสู้เรื่องนี้มานาน รีบนั่งรถไปกาญจนบุรี ไปถึงเห็นลูกช้างตกหลุมอยู่ ก็รีบถ่ายรูปไปยื่นเรื่องสำนักนายกฯ ทั้งๆ ที่กางเกงยังเปื้อนโคลน หวังจะช่วยลูกช้างให้ได้”

“There was this once when a letter arrived informing of the entrapment of elephants in Kanchanaburi. A pipeline was being constructed along the sides of the forest. And we had fought against it for a long time. I rushed to catch a ride to Kanchanaburi. When I arrived, I saw an elephant calf that had fallen into a hole. So, I hurriedly took photos and submitted the case to the Prime Minister’s Office. I did all this while my trousers were soaked in mud, in hopes of helping the baby elephant.”

“มีอยู่ครั้งหนึ่ง ช้างที่ดูแลอยู่หนีเตลิดออกไป ขณะที่เรากำลังรักษาตัวอยู่กรุงเทพฯ เจ้าหน้าที่ไปตามเท่าไหร่ก็ไม่ยอมกลับ ก็ต้องคิดหาวิธีโทรศัพท์กลับมา แล้วให้เจ้าหน้าที่เปิดสปีกเกอร์โฟนให้เราพูดเกลี้ยกล่อมว่า นี่แม่นะ กลับบ้านนะลูกนะ เขาได้ยินก็รีบกลับโรงช้าง เราสื่อถึงเขาได้จริงๆ”

“There was this once when we had an elephant come loose, and the elephant took off. At the time, I was in Bangkok for medical treatment. Our staff members failed to persuade the elephant to come back. So, they had to find ways and means of calling me up and putting me on speaker. I started comforting the elephant by saying that this is Mummy here; please come back home, my child. The elephant heard me speak, and willingly returned to the infirmary unit. So, successful communication with an elephant is a very real thing.”   

ด้วยความทุ่มเททำให้โซไรดาได้รับการยอมรับทั้งจากชาวบ้านและเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ชาย

Soraida’s devotion led to acceptance from the locals and the male staff members.

“การออกไปทำงานหลายครั้งมีแต่เจ้าหน้าที่ผู้ชาย เราเดินป่าลุยลำธารไปช่วยช้างตอน 4 ทุ่ม หรือนอนระเบียงของป่าไม้กับน้ำที่รั่ว ไม่มีห้องน้ำก็ไม่เคยบ่น จนเจ้าหน้าที่แอบพูดว่าลืมไปแล้วว่าเราเป็นผู้หญิง”

“Many times, when travelling out into the field, I would only be in the company of male staff members. We walked through the jungle and crossed streams to help an elephant at 10pm. We would also sleep on the jungle terrace while the water was leaking through. I never complained that there was no bathroom. The staff members discreetly said to me that they had forgotten that I was a woman.”

เรื่องชีวิตช้างเป็นเรื่องสำคัญก็จริง แต่ “การป้องกันการค้าช้างผิดกฎหมาย” ก็เป็นอีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่โซไรดาสู้ไม่ถอย จนเกือบเอาชีวิตไม่รอด เมื่อเธอเข้าไปเปิดโปงขบวนการค้าช้าง จนวันหนึ่งมีสายโทรศัพท์นิรนามโทรมาเพื่อบอกว่า เขาถูกจ้างให้มาเอาชีวิตและอยากจะเตือน เพราะอาจมีคนอื่นรับงานนี้ เนื่องจากมือปืนคนนั้นขอเลือกจะไม่ทำร้ายผู้หญิง อีกไม่นานก็ได้เห็นข่าวมือปืนคนนั้นเสียชีวิต จนเธอต้องพกปืนพร้อมมีใบอนุญาตติดตัวตลอด

While the lives of elephants have always been a leading priority, Soraida has also fought against the illegal trade of wild elephants, to the point where she almost lost her life. It was during a process in which Soraida was working towards exposing the trafficking networks that were conducting this illegal wildlife trade. One day, she received an anonymous phone call, informing her that the person had been hired to take her life. The person said that he wanted to warn Soraida, since there may be other people hired to do this job as well. This gunman chose not to harm women. Shortly after, there was news that the gunman had died. It got to the point where Soraida had to carry a gun with her, along with the gun permit.

“แต่ก่อนแค่ไหนก็ออกไปลุย มีไม้เท้าอันเดียวไปได้หมด มีออกซิเจนกระป๋องในกระเป๋า และมีเป็นถังในห้องนอน ผ่าตัดใหญ่นับไม่ถ้วน ต้องเจาะคอให้หายใจได้ก็ทำมาแล้ว แต่ตอนนี้ไม่ไหวแล้ว ต้องใช้รถเข็นเดิน แต่ทุกนาทีก็ยังอยากทำเพื่อช้าง เพราะที่ผ่านมาคือความภูมิใจและมีความสุข ติดอยู่ที่ว่าอยากให้มีคนมาสืบทอดต่อ”

“เพราะหากวันหนึ่งเราตายไป ใครจะสานต่อที่นี่” โซไรดาทิ้งท้าย

“In the old days, I would travel out to do fieldwork, regardless of the conditions. Just with one walking stick, I would go anywhere. I had a container of oxygen in my bag, and an oxygen tank in my bedroom. I have had countless major operations. I even had a hole made in my neck, so that I could breathe. Now, I can no longer have that kind of rough lifestyle. I have a wheelchair that I use to lean on for support when I am walking. But I still want to devote every minute to elephants because this has always been my pride and joy. So, it is my intention to have someone who can inherit my work.”

“One day, when I die, who will carry on the work I am doing?” Soraida concluded.
