Lampang — Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation, with the cooperation of the Prostheses Foundation, have produced a new prosthetic leg for Mosha, while also in the process of producing one for Motala. The planning, designing and production process of Motala’s prosthetic leg began taking place following the discovery that the elephant’s wound from her landmine injury had healed.
รายงานข่าวจากจังหวัดลำปาง แจ้งว่า รศ. เทอดชัย ชีวะเกตุ เลขาธิการมูลนิธิขาเทียม ในพระอุปถัมภ์สมเด็จพระศรีนคริรนทราบรมราชชนนี และคณะทำงานกว่า 10 คน ได้เดินทางมาร่วมทำการแก้ไขขาเทียมให้กับช้างน้อย พังโม่ชะ วัย 3 ปี 2 เดือน ซึ่งเท้าหน้าขวาเหยียบกับระเบิด ในเขตประเทศพม่า ขณะเดินอยู่กับแม่ เมื่อปี 2549
According to reports from Lampang, the production team is being led by Associate Professor Therdchai Jivacate, Secretary General of the Prostheses Foundation under the patronage of Princess Srinagarindra. The team of at least ten members arrived at Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation Hospital to make adjustments and reparations for the prosthetic leg of Mosha, an elephant calf aged three years and two months. Mosha’s front right leg was injured by a landmine in 2006 on the other side of the Myanmar border. Mosha was a baby at the time of the accident, and she was walking alongside her mother.

This case of adjustment involves the enlargement of the size of the prosthetic leg, since Mosha is growing up fast and the size of her legs has been increasing at a corresponding rate. The height of Mosha’s previous prosthetic leg was 27.5 inches; the most recent adjustments must now accommodate a new height of 31 inches. The width of the previous prosthetic leg was 31 inches; the adjustments must now accommodate a width of 33 inches. Boonyou Tippaya is serving as the director of the research, design and production of the elephants’ prosthetic legs, and he is closely supervising the processes involved.
ในส่วนของพังโม่ตาลา ซึ่งปัจจุบันมีอายุ 48 ปี เข้ารับการรักษาที่โรงพยาบาลช้างของมูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง เมื่อปี 2542 เนื่องจากเหยียบกับระเบิดในฝั่งประเทศพม่า จนขาหน้าด้านซ้าย กระดูกเท้าแตกละเอียดและเนื้อฉีกขาด อาการสาหัส นอกจากนั้นขาขวา ลำตัว ก็ถูกสะเก็ดระเบิดเป็นแผลด้วย สัตว์แพทย์ใช้วิธีการรักษาแบบแผลเปิด ตัดชิ้นเนื้อที่เน่าทิ้ง ซึ่งใช้เวลารักษายาวนานจนถึงปัจจุบันรวม 10 ปี ซึ่งก่อนหน้านั้นเมื่อปี 2548 ทางมูลนิธิขาเทียมฯได้เข้ามาเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อใส่ขาเทียมให้กับโม่ตาลา โดยการให้โม่ตาลาสวมถุงผ้าซึ่งทำด้วยผ้าใบ ภายในบรรจุขี้เลื่อย เพื่อให้โม่ตาลามีความคุ้นเคย ก่อนที่จะใส่ขาเทียมหลังจากแผลหายสนิทแล้ว
As for Motala who is now 48 years old, the elephant arrived for treatment at FAE Elephant Hospital in 1999. Motala was injured by a landmine on the other side of the Myanmar border. Her front left leg and foot suffered extreme damage down to the thoroughly crushed pieces of her bones, with the flesh on the wound site torn apart. Her front right leg and parts of her body were also wounded by fragments of the explosion. Veterinarians performed open wound surgery by removing the rotten pieces of the flesh. The healing process took a long time, and it has now been ten years since Motala’s operation. In 2005, the team from the Prostheses Foundation came in to make preparations for Motala to wear her prosthetic leg. They got Motala to begin by wearing a bag made of canvas cloth. The layers composing the bag contained a stuffing of sawdust. The bag was designed to help Motala develop a familiarity with wearing a new device, before she finally gets to wear her prosthetic leg following the complete healing of her wound.
ล่าสุดในช่วงบ่ายของวันที่ 15 ส.ค. 52 ที่ผ่านมา จากการตรวจบาดแผลซึ่งเป็นแผลผ่าตัด พบว่าลักษณะของแผลเท้าหน้าซ้ายมีขนาดแผลกว้าง 1 เซนติเมตร ยาว 3.5 เซนติเมตร มีหนองเล็กน้อย การเจริญของเนื้อเยื้อและผิวหนังดี ทางมูลนิธิขาเทียมฯจึงได้เริ่มต้นทำขาเทียมให้โม่ตาลา โดยเริ่มต้นจากการทำ Model ด้วยการหล่อขาข้างซ้ายก่อน หลังจากนั้นจะใช้พลาสติกแข็งชนิดเดียวกับที่ทำกะบะรถปิกอัพ เป็นวัสดุในการทำขาเทียม ส่วนลักษณะการสวมจะใช้วิธีประกบกับท่อนขา จริงแล้วใช้เข็มขัดล็อกกับขาให้แน่น โดยมีวัสดุนิ่มรองระหว่างผิวหนังที่สร้างใหม่กับขาเทียม อย่างไรก็ตาม ต้องทดลองให้โม่ตาลาลองสวมใส่ และเดินดูว่าจะยอมรับหรือไม่ หากโม่ตาลายอมรับก็จะถือว่าประสบผลสำเร็จ
On the afternoon of the 15th of August 2009, upon examination of the elephant’s operated wound site, the remaining wound with a width of 1 centimetre and a length of 3.5 centimetres could be observed. The wound released a small amount of pus. The growth of skin and tissue was considered to be in good progress. So, the team from the Prostheses Foundation went ahead with the production of Motala’s prosthetic leg, starting with the design of a model of the elephant’s front left leg. A solid plastic material, which is the same kind used to make the parts of a pick-up truck, will then be used to make the prosthetic leg device. The wearing will involve placing that material over the elephant’s leg, and fastening the prosthetic leg with a locked belt. A layer of soft material will be placed on the inner side of the prosthetic leg, and this soft layer will serve as a cushion for the elephant’s newly formed skin. Motala needs to experiment with wearing and walking on her prosthetic leg, and it remains to be seen whether she will accept this new addition to her lifestyle. If she ends up accepting her prosthetic leg, only then can the mission be considered a success.
