โซไรดา ชาลวาลา ผู้ก่อตั้ง กรรมการและเลขานุการมูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง และโรงพยาบาลช้างแห่งแรกของโลก ซึ่งอยู่ในเขตป่าสงวนแม่ยาว ต.เวียงตาล อ.ห้างฉัตร จ.ลำปาง เปิดโอกาสให้ทีมข่าว 77 ข่าวเด็ด เข้าเยี่ยมชมภายในบริเวณโรงพยาบาลช้างแห่งแรกของโลก มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง ซึ่งอยู่ในช่วงวิกฤตโควิด-19 โดยปกติทางโรงพยาบาลไม่อนุญาตให้บุคคลภายนอกเข้าไปในช่วงที่เกิดการแพร่ระบาด เนื่องจากเกรงมีการแพร่ระบาดได้ ซึ่งทางโรงพยาบาลมีการตรวจร่างกายของสัตวแพทย์ประจำโรงพยาบาลช้างอย่างต่อเนื่อง อีกทั้งยังมีมาตรการป้องกันอย่างเข้มงวด

Soraida Salwala, Founder, Secretary General, and member of the Board of Committees of Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation, has given the 77 Kao Ded team an opportunity to visit FAE Elephant Hospital. This is the world’s first hospital for elephants located in the Mae Yao Forest Reserve, Tambon Viangtan, Hangchat District, Lampang Province. The elephant hospital normally wouldn’t allow outsiders to enter the property during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, to protect against the spread of infections. The hospital’s veterinarians have regular health checks, and strict precautionary measures are in place.

โซไรดา ในวันนี้มีปัญหาสุขภาพในส่วนของเดินที่ต้องใช้ไม้เท้า หรือเกาะรถเข็นเดินดูช้างตามโรงช้างต่างๆ ด้วยความห่วงใย โซไรดา เปิดเผยว่า มูลนิธิเพื่อนช้าง ก่อตั้งเมื่อปี 37 เป็นโรงพยาบาลช้างแห่งแรกของโลก ซึ่งเป็นสถานที่เพื่อให้ช้างเจ็บป่วยมารักษา มีที่พักให้ควาญ หรือเจ้าของได้มาพักเวลาที่นำช้างมา ทางมูลนิธิช่วยเหลือทั้งหมด ค่ารถบางทีเอาช้างมาก็ต้องดูแลออกค่าใช้จ่ายให้ เนื่องจากไม่มีเงิน ซึ่งปกติจะมีช้างท้องอืดมารักษาอย่างต่อเนื่อง และประจำ แต่ช่วงโควิดไม่มีเลย  ตอนนี้มีช้างที่ดูแล 5 เชือกเท่านั้น

Soraida’s own health problems concern her walking. She has to use a walking stick; otherwise, she must lean on her wheelchair as she walks around to visit the elephants occupying the different infirmary units. Friends of the Asian Elephant Foundation was set up in 1993, and operates the world’s first hospital for elephants. The hospital accommodates elephant patients for treatment, and also provides accommodation for the mahouts or owners who come here with their elephants to care for them. The Foundation provides support in all areas. There are even cases where the Foundation assists in contributing to the transportation expenses, due to the owner’s incapacity to make the necessary payments. Normally, the hospital would accommodate elephants suffering from bloat on a regular basis. But ever since Covid began, there haven’t been any bloat cases. For the time being, the hospital is accommodating five elephants.

ปัญหาที่อยากเรียกร้องคืออยากให้ช้างทั้งประเทศได้รับการเยียวยา ควาญเจ้าของได้รับการดูแล ช้างบริโภค 10 เปอร์เซ็นของน้ำหนักตัว ซึ่งช้างต้องมีการดูแล ธุรกิจการท่องเที่ยวทำให้ช้างอยู่ได้ แต่ก็ต้องดูแลช้าง ปัญหาใหญ่เศรษฐกิจแย่มากจากโควิด เราอยู่ด้วยเงินบริจาค แต่อยากจะรบกวนภาครัฐให้ช่วยเหลือมากกว่า มีเงินกองทุนช้างแห่งชาติอยู่ในแผนแม่บท หากแผนผ่าน ทางมูลนิธิจะขอรับเงินเป็นรายปี เพื่อช่วยเหลือเยียวยา อยากให้รัฐดูแลแผนแม่บทนี้ ให้ช้างอยู่รอด ช้างทั่วประเทศไม่ลำบากนั่นเอง

The problem that the Foundation would like to see addressed concerns the compensation that elephants all over the country are entitled to. Mahouts and elephant owners must be looked after. Elephants eat an amount of 10% of their body weight. Elephants need to be cared for, and the tourism industry has allowed elephants to conduct their lives. But caring for elephants must still go on even during an economic crisis due to Covid. The Foundation needs donations to continue operations. But the government sector needs to play a more active role in supporting the elephant community. The National Elephant Fund has been incorporated into the Elephant Masterplan. Once the Masterplan is approved, the Foundation would like to be a recipient of annual support. The Foundation requests the government to look into the Masterplan, for the survival of elephants, and for elephants to be able to conduct their lives without hardship.
